About 30 to 40 minutes from downtown Nairobi, there is a giraffe center that protects giraffes. For an entrance fee, you can get up close and personal with the giraffes and even feed them, which helps to support the center and raise awareness of this protected species.
There are various types of giraffes in Africa, but the Rothschild’s giraffe, which lives in Uganda and Kenya, is a protected species because its population has decreased significantly. This is a center that protects Rothschild’s giraffe!
It’s a center that takes care of giraffes that have lost their habitat and releases them back into the wild. Quite a few giraffes are living in a good environment and being cared for.

About an hour and a half drive from Nairobi is the elephant orphanage run by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. David Sheldrick’s wife, Daphne Sheldrick, is a Kenyan wildlife conservationist. She was knighted by the British crown for her work against poaching and wildlife rescue.
Poachers build long fences under trees, set snares, and sprinkle salt. The animals smell the salt, walk over it, and get caught in the snare. The more they struggle, the tighter the snare gets, and eventually they walk around with their legs stuck in the snare until their legs rot or they lose the ability to walk and starve to death. Elephants, which live as long as humans with an average lifespan of 70 years, are also targeted by poachers. Their ivory fetches high prices on the market. Elephant orphanages are places where baby elephants whose parents have been killed by poachers are cared for, and when they are old enough, they are released back into the wild.
